The City of Waterfalls<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The sound of waterfalls can almost be imagined, although it varies greatly depending on the drop, the water flow rate and the distance from which it is heard. There are so many waterfalls in the Chiusaforte area that it can boast the title of “Municipality of waterfalls-where water dances over mountains.” <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most of these are concentrated in an area of a few kilometers, the Raccolana Valley, and among them the favorite is the high Goriuda waterfall, called “the Fontanon” by all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A sound overhead<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Why it is a favorite is quickly said: it is among those with the highest drop, it is easy to get to, it is close to an excellent restaurant, it is a very convenient stop for those going to or coming from Sella Nevea, but most of all it is special because you can walk behind it and look (and listen!) at it from below without getting wet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The sound of the Goriuda Fountain is that of water falling in free fall 80 meters from the side of Mount Canin to the pond below. Catalogued among the so-called “white noises,” it is similar to a continuous rustling sound. In general, it occupies the middle and high-pitched part of the listening field, and low frequencies-which characterize waterfalls with large water masses instead-are almost absent, since here, even in periods of great rainfall, the jet opens and mists up during the jump. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The resonance cave<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

This kind of sound is considered by many to be soothing and relaxing, but the special feature that makes that of the Fontanone so special is the cave below, where one can pause in listening. The cave in fact acts as a sounding board; it is a natural three-dimensional amphitheater that enriches the voice of the waterfall in an initially imperceptible way, revealing its magic slowly, little by little. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you close your eyes, you get the impression that the sound is coming from above, but also from behind and all around. It takes some time in silence to assimilate it, to grasp its nuances, moving around and trying to listen to its reflections. Little by little that rustling becomes richer, deeper, more defined. Simple and complex at the same time, it becomes almost hypnotic, so much so that it becomes a regret to leave. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A sound that cleanses<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Once you decide to set out again, our advice is to go in strict silence, slowly along the path, letting the sound fade into the distance and listening for it until it fades away near the road or even beyond. The sensation will be that of new, cleaned-up, more sensitive hearing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The listening point of.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

We wondered what this topophony might sound like when the valley is immersed in snow.
Daniele, who runs the trattoria Al Fontanon, is most likely the person who knows the waterfall better than anyone else, under various weather and seasonal conditions.
We asked him to tell us about its sound and he told us that when it is cold, very cold for days, the waterfall becomes a single pillar of ice with blue reflections and in the Goriuda cavern many small ice basins form where the drops falling from the vault sound like so many musical notes. The cavern turns into a large water idiophone.
since he told us about it we have been keeping an eye on the weather temperatures, but for a long time the waterfall has not frozen. As always we hope this is the good year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Along the Val Raccolana that connects Chiusaforte with Sella Nevea is the trattoria Al Fontanon, in whose parking lot you can conveniently leave your car. From there a path of a few steps and suitable for everyone leads to the waterfall <\/p>\n\n\n\n
